"Sometimes, just sometimes, when great or even good singers sing soul music an odd thing happens.
A thing that you experience oh so rarely. The feeling goes beyond passion, beyond excitement. Mystery
takes over. You are reminded that this music was born out of gospel, that before soul took on its themes
of money, success, black freedom, political struggle and love it was concerned with the search for the divine.
That's what happened to me, watching you sing last night. A condition of mystery approached a condition of
prayer. You've probably sung that song 500 times but you sang it like it was the first time. Your hands clutched
at the air as you hit the highest notes and you shook your head and beamed with pure helpless joy as you seemed to
wrench the words out of yourself. The band swelled and soared behind you, the drums and horns came in and the whole
place went wild. By the chorus the whole place was singing with you.
It was an amazing performance. Magic, pure and simple, just absolutely magic.
